We are looking forward to participating in the Stock and Land Victorian Beef week again. We would welcome you (Covid willing), at the “Admetus”cattle yards, just down the Port Fairy Road on Thursday 3rd Feb from 9 am. We will have all our female herd on display. This consists of 38 cows with 53 calves due in March/April, 17 pregnant heifers with 23 calves due and 15 weaner heifers. Our steer calves were sold in the Hamilton weaner sales and the bulls are at Cashmore Park.
The season has been a bit up and down with a very wet winter setting back the cows and calves a bit during mating, but it has been a very good spring and the cows and their calves have finished in very good order.
We have been running these cattle commercially since our first embryo importation in 2004. Since then, we have had several more embryo and semen imports. They are from the USMARC twinner line originally developed in Nebraska USA. We are continuing to try and improve our cattle. To this end we have just imported some more embryos from Mr. Joiner, our twinner collaborator in British Columbia. We are also using the International Genetic Solutions Multibreed evaluation through the American Simmental Association to develop EPDs using both pedigree and DNA information. At this stage this gives us information on the normal range of beef traits, and we are hoping to be able to expand that into the twinning trait in the future.
